Fornells
Minorca Details

There are testimonies of people in Fornells since the 5th century A.D. with the Church bearing testimony to this being a Paleochristian Harbor. During the Middle Ages the Talaia Fornells de la Mola was built to guard and protecting the northern coast of Menorca. Since the looting by the pirate Mahon Barbaroja on the Citadel in 1558 it was decided to build the Castle of Sant Antoni de Fornells and in 1662 the Castle was redesigned as a state military defence base.
Another castle near the suburbs can be considered as the origin of the old town of Fornells. Between 1630 and 1640 the first houses built there belonged to Fornelleras and in 1713 there were already more than 100 inhabitants. These first inhabitants were of the most part soldiers and their families, from the Castle of Sant Felip Es Castell at the port of Mahon who installed their families there when they moved to the North of the island.
